Our Monday Night Football prediction for the Chargers vs. Jets starts with the Jets consistency. The Jets come into this one with quite consistent behavior on both sides of the ball. Their scoring behavior on offense is trending flat at less than 2% growth week to week. While not great for Jets fan who want see improvement, for sports bettors who want to see predictability, this is great. What’s more is that their flat trend is backed by very low volatility, with only an x1.4 bounce rate. 

The other team in our Monday Night Football prediction has not been so smooth. On offense, five of their seven games have been above the 0.8 scoring behavior mark, including their last one. However, the two games before that were at 0.6 points scored per minute of possession or lower.

The question to be answered is if those two games were outliers, or part of their behavioral profile we must account for. A game against the Jets vaunted defense is the ultimate truth serum in that regard. Their defense is, like their offense, very consistent. 

Six of the Jets seven games have seen their defense hold opponents to a score prevention behavior (SPBx) rate of 0.6 points allowed per minute of possession time or fewer. They have less than a 10% trend in either direction and their bounce rate is under x2 and x1.9. As consistently “meh” as their offense has been, their defense has been consistently elite, hence the forthcoming MNF prediction. 

The Charger defense is the surprise to us as we made our Monday Night Football picks. Much maligned, aside from what now looks like two clear outliers in Week 1 and Week 7, this defense has held opponents to a SPBx of 0.65 or lower, and trending lower than that. Their defense is seeing a 10% week to week improvement in their SPBx and faces a Jets offense that seems ill equipped to send that trend in a different direction.
